This is work in progress.
CANON:
Canon RPG forums are basically RPG forums that a fan of a certain book, TV show or movie creates. An example of a type of this forum would be a Harry Potter forum, but only under certain conditions. If the creator of the forum kept the same houses, rooms, and more, it would be a canon RPG. If they changed the names of the houses and such, it wouldn't be canon, even if it was based off of Harry Potter. There are cases, such as this one, where forums can go under two categories.
ORIGINAL:
Original RPG forums are exactly the opposite of canon, plus another factor. Not only are these not canon, but they also aren't blatantly based off of something else. An original RPG is, of course, an RPG that someone has completely made up. This means completely making up the plot, the characters, and all of the other factors of a successful RPG forum. Sadly, these are becoming harder and harder to find, especially the less mainstream ones.
Those are the two main categories, but there are also many more sub-categories, if you will. These are like the genres of roleplaying forums:
HUMAN LIFE:
A human life roleplaying forum is exactly what it sounds like, you roleplay as if you were a different human. This could mean being a human in war, a human in a school, etc. School RPGs have become so big that some people consider it a category of it's own, but unless it is a complete and true school, with no roleplaying outside of the school, in my opinion, it is considered a human life RPG. There are even sub-sub-categories in this, such as War RPGs.
FANTASY:
Fantasy is yet another common genre, and it's also one of my favorites. Fantasy has become so widespread that the meaning of it has changed. It used to be that a fantasy RPG would be an RPG that was placed in a whole different world. Now that more people have been creating fantasy RPGs, it has been defined as an RPG that has characters such as dragons, fairies, goblins, any other mythical creature. Some examples of what a Fantasy RPG is considered today would be taking a look at Lord of the Rings. It has wizards, elves, demons, and other fantasy creatures that J.R.R. Tolkien created. That is what a fantasy RPG is considered as today. Although, that's not the only kind. Popular fantasy RPGs also have vampires, werewolves, witches, and more "creepy" creatures like that.
ANIMAL:
Well, we already covered human life RPGs, so we can't exclude the animal RPGs. Although the bios/character sheets usually aren't as long as the human life ones, considering that there's more to explain, it doesn't make them any less popular-or fun- to do. Animal RPGs are actually my specialty, and there's more to say about them than you think. This genre could include any animal that there is out there, but the main ones are cats, dogs, horses and wolves. Animal RPGs have many possibilities, considering there are so many animals out there, so you could probably find one with any other animal you wanted to roleplay! There are many choices to make, you could choose an RPG forum with one animal, or a group of different animals. Animal RPGs are already extremely popular and have gone up there with human RPGs, though many long-time an advanced RPers would prefer the human life ones, because they could be considered more detailed. I'm not saying that your posts in these RPGs can't be detailed...they really can be. It's just that some advanced RPers think of these RPGs as more "kiddish" than the others. That's not my opinion, but we all have our own.
There are many more types of RPGs, some of them smaller than others. I will end up writing something about more, but those are the main categories...in my opinion.
